The koalas nickname is native bear, even though koalas and bears aren’t related. The koala is related to the kangaroo and the wombat. Just like the kangaroo the koala also has a pouch, where the little koala cub stays for 5 months after the mother has breed in summer. A koala cub is the baby of an koala btw.
The reason the koala is called a koala bear is because the koala looks like a teddy bear. The koala has a very thick fur and even though the koala looks cute and cuddly it has very sharp teeth and claws.
The koala is a marsupial mammal and they are warm-blooded. Their lifespan is about 20 years.
An adult koala generally grows to 60-75 cm long. A cub is after 1 month about 1 cm. They live and sleep in the eucalyptus trees. It's hot, light and dry here.
Koalas are mostly nocturnal, that means that they are mostly active at night and asleep at day. They sleep for up to 19 hours.
In the wild live only around 2000 to 8000 koalas. The population has dropped by about 90% in less than a decade. This is due to diseases, danger around them like road kills and attacks from for example dogs and the destruction of their habitat, a narrow crescent around the eastern coast of Australia.
